On May 23rd at the McDonald’s annual shareholders meeting 9-year old Hannah Robertson gave McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson a piece of her mind! In about a minute or two she summed up what’s wrong with McDonald’s kid-targeted campaigns. Here is an excerpt from her speech:
…Something that I don’t think is fair is when big companies try to trick kids into eating food that isn’t good for them by using toys and cartoon characters…It isn’t fair that there are so many kids my age and younger that are getting really sick with diseases like diabetes and obesity…It would be nice if you stopped trying to trick kids into wanting to eat your food all the time…Mr. Thompson, don’t you want kids to be healthy so that they can live a long and happy life?”
Although he must have been stunned, Thompson tried to save face by responding with a lot of unfounded claims that McDonald’s actually sells healthy food like -his words- “chicken nugget happy meals and fat free milk” (really?!). Here are a few other claims he made:
…We don’t sell junk food…We provide high quality food, we always have…We are not marketing food to kids…”
