Did you know that over 50% of the US population does not get enough magnesium? (source)
Considering the data, it is very likely that YOU do not get enough magnesium.
It is likely that even more than 50% of the population is deficient in magnesium, some estimate as much as 70-80%. Continue reading to find out why so many of us are lacking the proper amount of magnesium and how to fix it!
Why are so many of us deficient in magnesium?
There are two main reasons why so many of us are deficient in magnesium. The first is because of soil degradation and the second is because of the fragility of magnesium. I will go into both of these issues in more detail below.
How Magnesium Deficiency Affects Your Body
- Higher risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
- Higher risk of osteoporosis
- Higher rate of depression
- Higher risk of heart disease
- High blood pressure risk
How Magnesium can Improve Health
Magnesium is vital in the following ways:
- Prevents tooth decay
- Helps the body detoxify
- Improves sleep
- Helps regulate blood sugar
- Helps regulate the bowel
- Lowers risk of diabetes
Why eating magnesium rich foods and magnesium supplements isn’t enough.
Because magnesium is fragile and not easily absorbed, vitamins usually do not help your body get more magnesium. Magnesium vitamins are usually very processed and as a result the mineral content in the vitamin is degraded.
When it comes to food, there are two issues at play here: soil degradation and processing of foods.
One of the reasons that so many people in the US are deficient in magnesium is because our soil has been stripped of most of it’s beneficial nutrients because of mono-culture (planting only one crop on a farm for commercial use), using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and GMO seeds. All of these things have contributed over many years to degrade the quality of soil in the US. Most of the essential minerals in soil are added back in with synthetic fertilizers and are not quality natural sources, so our food lacks a large portion of these important minerals.
The master mineral magnesium is missing from most of our topsoil, leaving the vast majority, perhaps 80%, with a failure to meet even the USDA’s recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 240 to 420 millgrams (based on age). It’s important to note that government RDAs are known to be well below optimum levels. Many experts think our magnesium levels should be twice the amount.” –Truth Theory.com
In addition, most foods go through some kind of processing before they get to your grocery store. Since magnesium is so fragile and can be broken down very easily by heating, cooking and even the passing of time, foods rich in magnesium have usually been heated in some way, thus degrading the magnesium content further. Even if they haven’t been heated, most foods from the grocery store have travelled for a day or more to get to you, which allowed for additional nutrient depletion.
For example, cashews have a high magnesium content. However, in the US, companies are required to “pasteurize” nuts. Pasteurization is a heating process that kills bacteria, but the problem is that it also kills good bacteria and degrades the nutritional quality of foods. So, even nuts that are labelled “raw” are not truly raw because they have to be pasteurized. The raw label just means that it has not been roasted or salted, but it has been heated through pasteurization.
If you want to find truly raw nuts you can sometimes find them at farmer’s markets or health food stores, but make sure they are unpasteurized.
However, even if you find truly raw cashews, it’s not enough to remedy a lifetime of magnesium deficiency just by eating cashews and a few other magnesium rich foods. Furthermore, you would have to eat A LOT of cashews to get enough magnesium if you are deficient.
3 Ways to increase your magnesium intake
You can sometimes find magnesium oil at a health food store or you can find it here.
Epsom salt baths can be tricky because if your water has a lot of contaminants like chlorine, it will actually do more harm than good to take a lot of epsom salt baths because your body will also absorb those contaminants.
3. Natural Calm
Because of natural calm‘s ionic state, “it allows the element to bond readily with water, making it possible for the body to absorb it.”

I highly recommend the book The Magnesium Miracle by Dr. Carolyn Dean. It goes into a lot more detail about our problem of magnesium deficiency and also has some incredible and inspiring stories about what a difference magnesium has made in the lives of her patients.
